On September 5th 2015 The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore (where some of episode 5 “Rent” of Outlander was filmed) held their first Outlander Day.
A few months previously we had met with the manager (Graham) of the Folk Museum @HighlandFolk who had contacted us about holding an Outlander event (He had heard about us as we’d already had fantastic small events at Inverness Museums @InvMAG and Highland Archives @HLHArchives they are all part of High Life Highland @hlhsocial ) ….we of course said that would be fantastic!!!! We gave him a few ideas of what sort of things we would like to see at such an event (he hasn’t read the books or the show only the bit where the museum was used for filming) eg. Basket Weaving, Wool Waulking, 18th Century cooking to name a few.
We then asked if we could open it up to other Outlander fans as we knew that fans would love to attend such an event. We are all members of the Facebook group Outlandish UK and we posted details about the event on the group page and we were amazed at how many members wished to attend from all over the UK!
Amazon Prime very kindly donated items for us to give away on the day . Thank you @AmazonVideoUK
The ladies from Badenoch Waulking Group sang some wool waulking songs and we even had a go ourselves!!! Three of the Ladies were actually in the waulking scene in Outlander.
We were fortunate that Claire, the Outlander Herbalist @OutlanderHerbal , was able to attend and gave talks about the different herbs in the 18th Century and what they would have been used for.
Outlandish UK @Outlandish_UK had a fantastic stall selling all kinds of Outlandish Merchandise all the proceeds went to Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe’s charities. The Outlandish Bakers @OutlandishBaker were there with cakes for everyone.
Outlandish UK also took along Big Pocket Jamie and Claire……
We even got a tweet from “Herself”
The day was a great success and it was great to meet up with other Outlander fans many whom are now old friends but we also made lots of new ones too!!
The day ended with dinner at a local hotel organised by Lisa Lyall (one of the admins from Outlandish UK)Thank you Lisa .
We would like to say a very big thank you to Graham and all the staff at the for such a wonderful day. A big thanks to Claire MacKay for giving up her Saturday and thank you to all the Outlandish UK members who came and made it such a special day.
The Museum were delighted with the day Click here to see their blog and they have already decided to hold another one next year….
